A major problem in the area of mobile satellite communications with low gain terminals is the severe degradation of channel performance due to multipath propagation of the signal travelling from satellite to mobile receiver.Assuming a Gilbert-Elliott model for the error characteristics of the channel,the performance of an LPC vocoder system is analyzed under various BERs and fading rates.To improve the performance of the system,two burst-error correcting algorithms are proposed and tested.Both objective and subjective measures were applied to assess the improvements on speech quality.The results are quite interesting mainly because no system overburden as for instance FEC or ARQ is required.A demo tape will be played at the conference.
