THE NL RANGE OF SUBMARINE SYSTEMS

This paper discusses the range of submarine optical telecommunications systems available from STC plc.The NL1 system whose first application will be to link the United Kingdom and Belgium and the NL2 version which will form part of the first optical transatlantic link (TAT-8) are described and compared in detail. Alternative configurations which can be made available according to the length,traffic capacity,and reliability requirements of a particular route are outlined together with some discussion of how these solutions to particular requirements may vary as the component technology develops.Some observations on the capabilities of short haul single span systems having no need for repeaters are also made.
