This paper describes the design concept for a High-Capacity Land Mobile Communication System presently under research and development at NTT, Japan. Objectives of the new system are: higher subscriber capacity, lower system construction cost, and up-graded services while using the same 800 MHz band as in the present system.Efficient spectrum utilization is achieved by such advanced techniques as narrowing channel separation, diversity reception, inter(1)intra-zone channel reassignment using a cochannel interference detection scheme, and adaptive transmitter power control. The spectral efficiency of this system is five times that of the present system; about 200,000 subscribers in central Tokyo, an approximately 600 km area. Mobile subscriber sets are compatible with the present system.
