Welcco~R: A NEW LIGHT TIN-COATED STEEL FOR CAN MAKING

The development of a low-tin-coated material suitable for welding is described. The material, called Welcco, has a very thin layer of free tin on the steel base, followed by a chromium-chromium oxide protective layer, containing less chromium oxide than in the case of TFS. Analysis of the surface layers by glow discharge spectrometry and by scanning electron microscopy is described and weldability is assessed by laboratory tests and confirmed on a commercial Soudronic line. Corrosion resistance and lacquer adhesion are also assessed. Welcco is expected to combine the best properties of both TFS and tinp/ate without some of their disadvantages.
