Pollution flashover will occur when the natural pollution of insulators on transmission lines reaches to a certain extent, resulting in pollution flashover accidents. Therefore, the analysis of natural pollution characteristics of insulators is of great significance to prevent the occurrence of pollution flashover. Based on equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD) and microscopic particle image analysis, the natural accumulation characteristics and test analysis of XP-70 type porcelain insulator is presented in this paper. The results show that the effect of insulator contamination is mainly reflected in wet sedimentation caused by gravity, in which the air humidity plays an important role, and the lower surface remains affected. The pollution severity has a significant influence on the natural pollution characteristics of the upper surface of insulator, but it has little impact on the lower surface. The particle size decreases with the increase of fouling time, increase of ESDD and the aggravation of pollution making the bottom surface is slightly different.
