Proposition of low-cost wireless sensor network for real-time monitoring and early wildfire detection in Lebanon’s forests

Wildfires have been destroying Lebanon’s forests and leading to the damage of its natural resources and ecological system. Recently, wildfires have impacted harmlessly the economy and even have caused losses in human lives. The absence of a national forest management policy and the lack of human and technical resources contribute to the degradation of Lebanon’s forests. The early detection of fires can contribute to controlling fires before it takes up wide spaces. In this paper a low-cost real-time wireless sensor network dedicated for early detection of fires is proposed. It considers flexibility, scalability and power consumption requirements. The system architecture and the implementation of the proposed system are described. Applied testing and verification processes demonstrate the system effectiveness and feasibility.
