Early Historical Floods in Central Texas

Some of the largest floods in Texas occurred in its early days of being settled. Very little is known about these floods but some information is recorded in diaries, short newspaper articles, and other documentation. Early pioneers included ASCE members, civil engineers in Texas who helped to recover from these floods and in turn these floods provided lessons in how to handle future floods. These floods helped to shape Texas and its civil engineering projects such as flood control projects and even led to the stream gages in Texas. This paper compiles accounts of these early floods such as 1833, 1843, 1869, 1870, 1900, 1913, and 1921 floods.
