Reconstruction of lower lumbar defects in an oncologic patient using the rotated latissimus dorsi muscular flap: a case report and literature review

Background: Defects in the lateral lumbar area are a problem during plastic surgery. Causative factors include tumor, trauma, inflammation and infection. An array of repair methods have been designed according to patient conditions. No treatment consensus has been reached to-date.Case Presentations: A male patient aged 66 years showed tumor metastasis across the sinuses 3 years after radical nephrectomy. Subcutaneous tissue including tumor scars, muscles, and ribs were surgically removed. Latissimus dorsi rotatory flaps were used to repair the defect.Conclusions: We highlight a safe and effective surgical method to overcome lateral lumbar defects. Following a literature review, we propose a systematic treatment concept for the repair of lateral lumbar defects.
