Condition monitoring (CM) and fault diagnosis and detection (FDD) of rotating machines (RM) have an important role in today's industrial world. Importantly, protecting valuable machines from a sudden breakdown is vital to improve system availability and to reduce maintenance costs. Undoubtedly, wind turbines consider being a key element of sustainable and renewable energy. The Gearboxes are considered to be one of the vital and main parts of electromechanical equipment. Thus, many kinds of research and engineers aim to develop fault diagnostic techniques by considering some critical points such as diagnostic performance, accuracy, continuity, etc. Image processing is a two-dimensional space analysis, and it is simple to obtain data using this type of analysis. In addition, image analysis techniques are non-contact, non-intrusive, and cheap. The proposed study's main contribution is to review image processing-based methods for CM and FDD of two types of RMs; wind turbines and gearboxes. Challenges and future trends are highlighted.
