The rudiment concept of visual display initially began with the trade of goods by early civilizations. Goods were arranged by traders to attract consumers to buy merchandise. Display is the personal touch point within retail and wholesale venues that visually engages a customer and creates the desire to buy. Visual merchandising is much more comprehensive than merely the display of products. It is the total experience a customer encounters when approaching a retail venue. Visual merchandising is inclusive of the exterior, the interior, the layout, fixtures, lighting, signage, sounds, scents, and overall ambiance of a physical or virtual retail space.
