ICOMP'05 Phishing Attacks - A Socially Engineered Threat to e-Business

Internet and World Wide Web have opened new avenues for information resources as well as providing open grounds for increasing crime waves. Recent attacks against online customers and businesses by cyber criminals have brought about new security concerns and subsequent legislations to protect businesses and private individuals. Identity theft has increased ten fold in the last decade, personal information and account details have been stolen over the Internet and used for illegal transactions. This paper examines methods used and causal effects that attack on the Internet are having on the users and businesses. Phishing - a form of identity theft technique used by cyber criminals to gain personal information; using fraudulent e-mail messages that appear to come from legitimate enterprises. In the past, not much has been done by Governments and businesses to stem the flow of attacks. But increasingly, some international cooperation is beginning to tackle security threats straight from source.
