A Fault Location Strategy with Coordination of Relay Protection Devices in Active Distribution Networks

The directional power flow caused by the integration of distributed generation in the distribution network may reduce the accuracy and adaptability of traditional fault location methods. To address the problems of the traditional matrix algorithm in fault location such as performing multiple fault location on assumption of different positive directions for different power supply, the large amount of calculation for fault determination processing and the high requirements on data acquisition system, a fault location strategy for active distribution networks coordinated with relay protection devices is hereby proposed. By adding relay protection functionality to some automated terminals, the automated terminals will trip immediately after a fault occurs. Thus, the double-ended power supply network is divided into several single-ended networks, and the fault location of active distribution network is transformed to fault location for passive distribution networks. A simulation is carried out to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the strategy.
