This work is devoted to study the insulator behavior in the desert region. The purpose of our study is to examine the effect of the increasing of the sand quantity uniformly and non-uniformly distributed with different polluted layer widths on the insulator surface behavior. The leakage current (LC) signal represents an important source of information. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technique is used to extract the harmonic components of the LC for each configuration of the pollution. The fundamental component and the odd harmonic components can be well correlated with the insulator surface state. We also used the recurrent plot (RP) technique applied on the LC waveforms. We based on the variation of the RP maps to monitoring the insulators surface state.
