Fault diagnosis in technical systems using knowledge based techniques has received considerable theoretical and practical interest over the last years. In hydraulic systems, the fault diagnosis process presents a particular difficulty because of the complexity of the systems and the possible risk by the searching for defective components due to the high operating pressures. This paper presents first the diagnostic problem in these systems and second how knowledge representation structures have been used to solve both the real time diagnostic problem as well as the diagnostic problem after dialogue with the user. Finally, the paper discusses the suitability of each method for various requirements of the practice.
