摘要

XML (Extensible Markup Language) was originally created for large-scale electronic publishing. XML has received wide-acceptance as data exchange medium beyond the original intent. Two challenges lie ahead of universal adoption and ubiquity of XML in spite of its popularity: One is in the performance of machine-to-machine communication, and the other in human usability. Parsing overhead is so great that it almost offsets the benefit of easy data exchange. Although human-readable, XML format is not appropriate as an everyday medium for humans. Both of these issues can be addressed when it is approached as if it were plain text.
