High-Temperature Corrosion Behavior of Alloys in Mixed-Gas Environments

In practice, high-temperature commercial processes such as fossil-fuel combustion producecomplex gaseous environments which can be some combination of oxidizing, sulfidizing, andcarburizing to the alloy components. Surface degradation beyond just oxidation can be highlyaggressive and, hence, unwanted. New efforts to increase the efficiency of and reduce theemissions from fossil-fuel power plants has led to higher operating temperatures and localizedreducing conditions that favor sulfidation and carburization. This presentation will discuss recentlaboratory-scale efforts to better understand of the effects of compositional and environmentalfactors on the corrosion behavior of model and commercial alloys in sulfidizing, carburizing andmixed atmospheres at temperatures above 650°C. A main aim of this research is to guide alloyselection and design for use in advanced combustion systems.
