In 1994 the Department of Defense, under the auspices of United States Space Command (USSPACECOM), conducted a study of current satellite Telemetry, Tracking and Commanding (TT&C) capabilities and outlined future, joint satellite control network architecture options. The study, known as the Future Integrated TT&C Architecture Study (FITAS), was undertaken to identify areas of duplication between services and other Government agencis, and propose integrated architecture options that the various, existing satellite control networks could evolve into. The most significant near-term action proposed was integration of the Naval Satellite Control Network and the Air Force Satellite Control Network into a common user network.
