A driver information system, based on variable message signs(VMS), is being procured by the UK Highways Agency for the strategichighway network between London and the Midlands, an area known as theEnvelope for the purposes of this project. Mott MacDonald, inassociation with MVA Systematica, has been commissioned to achieve theimplementation of the driver information system in the Midlands Moduleof the Envelope and to lead the development of Regional Control Centresfor the Envelope as a whole. The system will provide the Highways Agencywith the largest driver information system in the UK and may provide abasis for the potential development of a national network managementsystem. The following paper provides an overview of the driverinformation system which is to be implemented and details the status ofthe project at the moment in the context of the projects objectives, thefunctional analysis of Regional Control Centres and the proposals forimplementation of the road-side infrastructure
