This paper introduces recent advances in research on 3D shapeontologies. The purpose of shape ontologies is to formalize thecharacteristics of 3D geometric primitives so as to bridge the gapbetween knowledge-level representation of shapes in the human mind andtheir low-level computer graphics representations. In the formalizationsdescribed in this paper, an intermediate symbolic representation in theform of implicit, parametric functions is used for this purpose. Withthis intermediate level representation of shape knowledge it becomespossible to interactively change the “meaning” of aprimitive by transforming its parametric space according to informationextracted from natural language and/or hand gestures. Furthermore,“meaningful” hierarchical combinations of shapes intocomplex shapes also becomes possible because they can also beparameterized and thus formalized
