Directional ocean wave spectra are important because they providea quantitative analysis of the ocean surface. The use of HF radar as aremote sensing tool for the measurement of directional wave spectra hasbeen shown to be feasible previously. HF radar is a particularlyeffective tool as it not only has excellent range (typically 150 km-200km offshore), but also has excellent spatial, temporal and frequencyresolution. In particular the excellent frequency resolution permits theanalysis of directional wave spectra to an extremely fine degree. Thepaper describes progress that has been made in implementing algorithmsto analyse the spectra in a machine automatic manner
