This paper demonstrates, using a flange mounted brushlesspermanent magnet DC servomotor by way of an example, how an iterativesolution of the equations governing the thermal, electrical and magneticprocesses can be used to estimate the temperature distribution and hencethe performance of a machine more accurately. Details of the test motorare given. Phase current waveforms and their RMS values are obtainedfrom a dynamic simulation of the PWM controlled drive, which in turnenables the iron and copper losses to be calculated under any specifiedload condition, with due account of the effect of temperature on thewinding resistance and the magnet demagnetization characteristic, andthus the induced EMF waveform
