FORMATION AND EVOLUTION OF INTERMETALLIC PHASES IN THE Mg-Nd-Zn-Zr SYSTEM

A diffusion multiple was designed to study the intermetallicphases in the Mg-Nd-Zn-Zr system. Pure metal blocks wereassembled and then sealed in an Al cylinder by electron beamwelding in a vacuum chamber. Hot isostatic pressing was appliedto make metal blocks closely bonded. The samples were quenchedin ice water after annealed at 300 °C for 400 and 600 hours,respectively. Many intermetallic phases including Mg12Zn13,Mg2Zn3, MgZn2 and Mg2Zn11 between Mg and Zn blocks,Mg41Nd5 and Mg3Nd between Mg and Nd blocks, NdZn2,NdZn3, Nd13Zn58 and Nd2Zn17 between Nd and Zn blocks,αZn3Zr and Zn39Zr5 between Zn and Zr blocks, T1~T3 ternaryphases at the intersection of Mg, Nd and Zn blocks were detectedby SEM and EDS. The formation and evolution process ofintermetallic phases layers in this diffusion multiple are discussed.
