A Novel Process for Producing Large Scale Mg-Sheets

This paper describes a novel processing route for the large scalemanufacturing of magnesium sheets. This processing routeconsists of the production of magnesium tubes by hot extrusionwith a subsequent forming step. The processing route allows themanufacture of magnesium sheets with enhanced propertiescompared to those manufactured by conventional hot rolling orextrusion. The extrusion of tubes enables the manufacturing ofmagnesium sheets with extrusion presses available today, offeringa new market for the extrusion industry. With the processcombination of extrusion and unfolding a reduction of anisotropyof the material properties is possible. This makes these sheetsespecially suitable as prematerial for deep drawing purposes. Themechanical properties at room temperature and at elevatedtemperatures of 250 °C of the produced sheet metal are thencompared to those of hot-rolled or directly extruded AZ31 sheetmetal. The characterisation of all sheets is done by microstructuraland texture investigations.
