The implementation of a piezo-electric acoustic sensor fornon-intrusive detection of the energization status of 3-Φ electricpower cables is presented. Simultaneous excitation of a piezo-electriccrystal by acoustic vibrations and electric field may occur. The Fourierspectral analysis of the sensor's output signal is used to determine thecurrent loading status of the cable. Test results are included for bothshielded and non-shielded 3-Φ cables. Also, the possible use of anoptical fiber interferometer for acoustic wave detection is discussed
