This paper discusses the application of genetic algorithms tooptimize a magnetostatic circuit problem. The use of a geneticalgorithm, in conjunction with a standard finite element analysissoftware package, allows several design parameters to be optimizedsimultaneously. As an example, a magnetostatic circuit consisting of alinear magnet with a pole piece is optimized to minimize magneticmaterial volume, while maintaining at least a minimum field value. Basicgenetic algorithm theory is discussed
