The clinical application of microcomputers in the treatment ofpatients with severe speech dysfunction

Reports on an investigation into the use of speech recognitionsystems coupled with high quality digitized speech recording inproviding communication aids for patients with severe speech dysfunctionsecondary to brain damage. Commercially available speech boards are usedto evaluate the practical problems in using a speech-driven voiceprosthesis with brain damaged patients. The speech board interpretsnonrecognizable vocalisations and translates them into digitizedrecognizable speech phrases. The limitations of such systems arediscussed and methods of selection of patients for trials with suchequipment are given
