Research is being conducted at the Goddard Space Flight Center todevelop aperture synthesis in two dimensions for future application tomicrowave remote sensing of the Earth from space. A laboratory prototypehas been assembled consisting of a two element interferometer (twoantennas connected together to form a coherent correlation radiometer)mounted on an x-y positioner so that all baselines an a cartesian gridcan be measured. The minimum spacing is approximately one-halfwavelength and the maximum spacing is about 50 wavelengths. Initialtests have been completed and an image has been successfully obtained.The image was obtained by discretizing the theoretical response of theinstrument and using measurements on the actual instrument to correctfor gains and offsets in the RF system
