STANDARDISATION OF HYDRAULIC TESTS FOR DETERMINING HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY

Hydraulic tests give important information that can be used to determine hydraulic conductivity of sub-surface materials, and more specifically: 1. to estimate the hydraulic properties of groundwater flow systems 2. to determine groundwater flow and solute transport parameters used in modeling 3. by measuring the properties of materials of low conductivity to confirm their suitability for insulation (in form of surface insulation, or rather as geological barrier) 4. to plan water supply and seepage installations Up to now no standardised method exists to allow the determination of the hydraulic conductivity. Depending on the purpose and the location of investigation, several methods can be used, e.g. pumping tests (long-term and short-term), openendtests, pulsetests, packertests, slug and bailtests, drillstemtests, transient response method or squeeze injection, each with specific advantages and disadvantages (Coldewey & Krahn 1991) (see Table 1).
