The authors discuss fault arcing in a MV transformer substationwith a comparison between SF6 and air insulated switchgear.The work is concentrated on the overpressure (pressure rise) in thecable and transformer compartments. There is reason to believe thatpressure rise should be higher with SF6 compared to air. Fullscale tests have shown that the maximum pressure rise is about equal forSF6 and air, but with a significantly longer duration of thepressure rise in the case of SF6. It has been found difficultto simulate practical conditions by small scale model tests
