Using finite difference time domain techniques to model electricaldischarge phenomena

This paper investigates the use of finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) models in the study of electrical discharges, particularlythrough the measurement of radiated signals. Support for electrostaticfields within the model is demonstrated. Signals radiated by a partialdischarge pulse are simulated and found to be in good agreement withexperiment. Improvements required to create more sophisticated modelsare identified
