Cultivation of Aurantiochytrium sp. L3W Using Organic Waste for Poly Unsaturated Fatty Acid Production

The world demands for fish is increasing, while fish meal and oil are used as the components of fish feed for the fish aquaculture. In order to conquer this dilemma, the alternatives have been examined. As for a fish meal, the potent alternatives such as soy bean have been found, whereas fish oil alternatives are in a quest. Since polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in fish oil are the key constituents for growth of fish, we focused on Labyrinthulea producing PUFAs as a promising fish oil alternative. In this study, Aurantiochytrium sp. [strain L3W) was used as Labyrinthulea, while organic wastes were evaluated as its substrate. The strain L3W strain grew successfully in the medium prepared by adding the plant residues such as orange and lemon peels to the filtered seawater, though the cultivation was carried out under unsterilized condition. In addition, soy sauce cake discharged from soy sauce factory was also useful for cultivation of the strain L3W, though that contained high amount of salt (4 %). As for the liquid waste from a fruit jam factory, it could be used as the good carbon source. Finally, productivity of PUFAs by the strain L3W in these cases was estimated.
