Evaluation of Pretreatment Effect for Spent Mushroom Substrate on Methane Production

In this research, various pretreatment was applied to spent mushroom substrate (SMS) for high efficiency recovery of methane. Hot water treatment, acid treatment using H2SO4, and alkali treatment using NaOH or KOH were applied and evaluated as pretreatment. As a result, methane produced were 119.1 mL / g-dry weight (D.W.) in untreated system, 55.5 mL / g-D.W. in hot water treatment, 22.5 mL /g-D.W. in acid treatment, 219.1 mL / g-D.W. in alkali treatment, and the alkali treatment showed the largest amount of methane recovered. Alkali treatment combined with heating did not significantly affect the amount of methane produced. Also, there was no significant difference in the amount of methane gas produced between NaOH treatment and KOH treatment. From the above results, optimum pretreatment for application of SMS to methane fermentation was alkaline treatment. It was also showed the unnecessity of heating and the effectiveness of KOH treatment for pretreatment of SMS on methane production.
