Suspended Peat Particle Flux at the Northern Part of the Bengkalis Island

Peat that collapsed from 1988 to 2016 on the northern bank of Bengkalis Island, Riau, Indonesia was estimated to be about 3.8 ×x 10~6 t, and in the tidal flat formed by the newly deposited peat particles, that collapsed at another coast. The deposit derived from 5.1 × 10~5 t was estimated. As a result, it was estimated that 14% of the collapsed peat deposits in the tidal flat on Bengkalis, 86% being deposited in the sea area. Accumulated peat particles and clay particles forms tidal flat. But originally, peat particles were derived from the collapsed of the peat coast. To clarify the mechanisms of the formation of the tidal flat, suspended solids concentration, transportation mechanisms should be clarified. In this study, peat particles concentration and tidal current in the northern coast of Benkalis Island were investigated. From the mooring observations of the underwater microscope observations, peat particles were determined, and horizontal flux of peat particle was calculated. At 500 m offshore, peat particles were moving from Malacca Strait and flow to Bengkalis Strait. We concluded that the cape head affected the tidal current and mass flux of the peat particles to the west shore.
