The ANAMMOX (Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation) bacteria were cultivated in the 12 m3 of pilot-plant seeded with activated sludge. In the initial batch cultivation mode, the added nitrite was sharply removed by endogenous denitrification while the ammonium concentration was increased. Ammonium nitrogen started to decrease by the Anammox reaction from 44 days of operation. The batch mode was switched to the continuous cultivation when the partial nitritation was stabilized. The AOB was enriched directly in 24m3 of pilot-scale SBR. Low dissolved oxygen concentration lower than 0.5mgO2/L was considered as a main operating parameter to prevent growth of nitrite oxidizing bacteria. The AOB reactor represented to 0.2kgN/m3/d of nitrite production rate at 0.4 kgN/m3/d of nitrogen loading rate. And then, the enriched ANAMMOX bacteria was seeded to the single stage SBR. The operating mode based on feed distribution was employed to single stage nitritation/ANAMMOX. The ANAMMOX bacteria quickly adapted to intermittent aerobic conditions with granulation by representing 0.46kgN/m3/d of nitrogen removal rate and 87.0% of nitrogen removal efficiency within few weeks.
