Investigation of Water Supply System and Water Usage in Urban Kampung of Bandung City, Indonesia

Clean water is an essential service for human beings regardless their social and economic conditions. Meanwhile, urban kampung is typically a dense area in city that is inhabited by low-income households, who could not afford safe water provided by formal water providers. Due to this barrier, the urban kampung of Bandung city, Indonesia has developed the alternative sources of water supply using either deep well or shallow dig-well. This research focuses on understanding the typology of water supply system in the area and analyzing the water usage. The ground information of the present situation was obtained from field surveys, water quality tests, interviews with local stakeholders and questionnaire surveys to domestic respondents. The findings show that the community-based water supply system has significant roles in providing water for the urban kampung residents. 45% of the residents use communal wells or individual wells as main water resources, and the majority of the residents claim that they are satisfied by the present water supply system. However, some wells are contaminated by bacteria due to no water treatment system. This fundamental information will be useful to improve the current system to suitable water supply system in the urban kampung area.
