Fiber optic cables are of increasing importance for local area networks, and residential applications. Flame retardant UV-cure materials have shown promise for the manufacture of tight-buffer cables'. They provide benefits of easy processing at higher speeds with significant reduction in scrap rates compared to thermoplastics, and improved attenuation at low temperatures. New, pigmented compositions have been designed for UL94 V-0 rating at 1.6mm thickness, with minimum LOI of 29%. And prototype 12-fiber distribution cables have passed UL1666 and UL1685 testing for flame propagation and smoke density. The new compositions are also halogen-free and lead-free.
