This paper describes briefly the main tasks and methodsthat have led to lower total anode effect (AE) duration atNordural smelter. Anode effect is a phenomenon whichoccurs when alumina concentration is low in theelectrolyte and eventually increases the resistance in thepot, making instability, less aluminum production andincreases PFC emissions [1]. Despite a current increase, substantial reduction of total anode effect (AE) durationhas been achieved at Nordural smelter over the last threeyears with simple tasks that could be implemented inmost smelters. The main reason for the reduction of totalAE duration at Nordural is shorter reaction time amongoperators, analysis of AE root causes, physicalexperiments in pot control, prioritizing of procedures andstatistical analysis as a measure of the gain of eachprocess or control change.
