Though warm and hot sheet forming operations enhance thelimited formability of aluminium alloys, the high cost and lowproduction rates make them unfit for the demanding automotivesector. A non-isothermal stamping approach, referred to as hotblank - cold die (HB-CD), promises a fast/economic alternativewhile overcoming the limited formability issues of the material.This, however, necessitates characterizing and modeling thecomplex material behavior over a wide range of temperatures andstrain rates, which is the prime focus of this work. Detailedmechanical testing, aided by digital image correlation (DIC), iscarried out on an automotive-grade 5182 aluminium alloy sheet. Aphenomenological model is developed and is shown tosuccessfully capture the isothermal behavior of the material overthe full temperature/strain rate range for HB-CD stamping.
