Power grid systems are undergoing a rapid evolution globally towards the attainment of a smart grid system. Power substations, which distribute power locally from the power plant to the customer through the transmission and distribution system, are electrically connected to each other in order to maintain the power generation and the load utilization. To ensure stable operation, protection, surveillance and control systems are installed at each substation facility, and gradually all these systems are evolving towards smart functions. With the introduction of the IEC 61850 standard in the electric power sector, the digitization and automation of substation protection, surveillance, and control systems has been progressing at a faster rate than other standards. As the substation engineering and operating environment is being changed from traditional H/W based control cable terminal connection to S/W based information model mapping, existing engineers are now facing difficulty in operating and testing the due to the change from traditional analog working environment to the digital environment. In this paper, we propose a method to perform System configuration description Language (SCL) verification based on S/W using substation engineering data. The proposed method would help substation engineers to enable ease in configuration, operation, troubleshooting and testing in digital substation environment.
