This paper is an experimental/computational analysis of the transient fluid dynamic mechanisms inherent in open cavity flow fields. The goal of the current research is to develop a physically verifiable description of the two-dimensional transient shear layer oscillation cycle mechanisms associated with open cavity flow fields. This has been accomplished by conducting experiments over a large width to length ratio cavity to simulate two-dimensional flow and by performing two-dimensional numerical simulations. A two dimensional open cavity oscillation cycle is described.
