The National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) of Japan is the onlynational research institute for aerospace engineering and services inJapan. NAL is a pioneer of supercomputer development and utilization inJapan. Since 1993, NAL has developed the Numerical Wind Tunnel (NWT),consisting of 166 parallel-connected Fujitsu vector processors and hasbeen providing substantial computational power resources to scientistsand industries since 1993. This paper describes the background of NWT'sdevelopment, its present status and computational fluid dynamics (CFD)research being carried out on NWT
