Metalclad substations using SF6 as the principleinsulant are by no means a new concept having been introduced in thelate 1950s. Today, its application especially in areas of highelectrical load density such as towns and industrial centres, isworld-wide. Since its introduction specifications have changedconsiderably, particularly with regard to safety, operationalrequirements and maintenance considerations. Here, the author describeshow, in order to meet these latest specifications, GEC ALSTHOM hasrecently developed a range of 145 kV GIS, type designated F75
