Fuzzy arithmetic is a successful tool to solve engineeringproblems with uncertain parameters. The generalized mathematicaloperations for fuzzy numbers can theoretically be defined making use ofZadeh's extension principle. Practical real world applications of fuzzyarithmetic, however require an appropriate form of implementation forthe fuzzy numbers and the fuzzy arithmetical operations. For thisreason, the often applied concept of triangular fuzzy numbers and themore promising approach of discretized fuzzy numbers are presented andrated with respect to their practical application to solve engineeringproblems with uncertain parameters. As an example, a rather simple buttypical problem of mechanical engineering is considered, consisting ofdetermining the displacements in a two-component massless rod undertensile load with uncertain elasticity parameters
