Fuzzy logic-based information processing in submarine combatsystems

Current methods for data integration and decision support insubmarine combat systems do not adequately account for uncertainty in anautomated fashion, hence continuing a heavy reliance on operatormanipulation of input data and human interpretation of outputinformation. Fuzzy logic offers an enabling technology for automateduncertainty management in the data integration process. Application ofthis technology to the fuzzy characterization of contact speed withuncertain information is demonstrated, and is shown to providesignificant improvement in tracking solution quality for the single-legTarget Motion Analysis problem. The uncertainty in the target end-pointlocation is described by an enhanced Area of Uncertainty region, whichis obtained through combination of the derived fuzzy rangecharacterization with conventional probabilistic information. Follow-onefforts are in progress to address the issue of modeling uncertainty inthe basic structure of a fuzzy logic system
