SPACEFIBRE: A MULTI-GIGABIT/S NETWORK TECHNOLOGY FOR SPACECRAFT ON-BOARD DATA-HANDLING PPLICATIONS

SpaceFibre is a very high-speed serial data-link beingdeveloped by the University of Dundee for theEuropean Space Agency (ESA) which is intended foruse in data-handling networks for high data-ratepayloads. SpaceFibre is able to operate over fibre-opticand electrical cable and supports data rates of 2 Gbit/sin the near future and up to 5 Gbit/s long-term. It aimsto complement the capabilities of the widely usedSpaceWire onboard networking standard: improvingthe data rate by a factor of 12.5, reducing the cablemass and providing galvanic isolation. Multi-laningimproves the data-rate further to well over 20 Gbits/s.This paper provides an introduction to SpaceFibre andits protocol layers, Quality of Service (QoS), FaultDetection, Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) capabilities,and application architectures. The current status of theSpaceFibre specification is also summarised.
