Prospects of energy efficiency in the Slovenian industry

Strategic objectives of energy policy in the EU and Sloveniaare to increase energy efficiency, utilization of renewable energyand reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Energy efficiencymeasures and utilization of renewable energy sourceshave been consistently incorporated into all energy strategicdocuments in Slovenia. Energy consumption in industry representsabout one third of final energy consumed in Slovenia.The National Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2008–2016 forSlovenia defines different energy efficiency measures in industry.The expected energy savings in industry are 1,376 GWhby 2016. Energy efficiency measures in industry according tothe EU Directive 2006/32/EC on energy end-use efficiencyand energy services include measures for more efficient use ofelectricity (high-efficient electrical motors, lighting …), energymanagement systems, increasing the scope of environmentallyfriendly energy production from renewable energysources and CHP systems and other measures. The intensiveimprovement of energy efficiency is a goal of the New NationalEnergy Program for the period until 2030. The proposed energyefficiency measures in industry include measures in themanufacture of steel, paper and other processes, increasingefficiency of boilers and combined heat and power. The expectedenergy savings in non-ETS industry are estimated to3,149 GWh by 2030.The paper gives an overview of the state and prospects ofenergy efficiency in industry not included in emission tradingschemes (non ETS) and also evaluate the expected energy savingsin industry included in emission trading schemes for theperiod to 2030. The expected energy savings in ETS industryare estimated to 5,151 GWh by 2030.The expected energy savings in ETS industry are higher thanin non-ETS. To achieve expected energy savings require intensiveimplementation of all proposed measures.
