Organization: a critical consideration in product development

The aerospace business environment has changed significantly during the last 10 years and will continue to change through the 1990's. The situation facing the industry is that of fluidity and change. The old ways of doing business were good. in fact very good, but they are no longer enough to ensure financial viability and success. Many companies have realized the critical role of product development in improving their competitive standing and have implemented approaches like Integrated Product Development (IPD) and multi-discipline teams. An extensive effort to institutionalize multi-disciplinary teams and IPD at Space Systems Division, LMSC has shown significant gains. These gains did not come for free.
