The real-time performance of telephone switching systems and theassurance methodology used for monitoring and assuring that new featuresare introduced into the system with little or no detriment to thereal-time performance of the switching system are discussed. Two simplestochastic models that serve as primitive elements in a more complexmodel are described. These models are combined to form the overallsystem. The elements that join the models together are the entry andexit rates of the tasks entering and leaving each subsystem described bythe primitive models. The real-time performance metrics are derived fromthe deliverables at each phase of the development lifecycle. A desirablecharacteristic of these metrics is that the real-time metrics derived atsucceeding phases of the lifecycle more accurately represent theresulting real-time performance of the end product than the precedingreal-time indicator. Three types of indicators of system real-timeperformance are derived throughout the product development lifecycle.These indicator types are projections, estimations, and measurements
