Radiation therapy is a well know cancer treatment method. Eventhough it is widely accepted that the individual's response to radiationis heterogeneous, current practices are based on almost uniform fractiondoses. Late radiation effects cannot be predicted and the treatment hasa very weak feedback. A method to quantify the tissue response toradiation would radically alter conventional treatment norms by allowingthe radiation oncologist to tailor treatment to the individual in anunprecedented manner. We show that the α and β dielectricdispersions can be related to radiation induced changes in bothextracellular matrix and cell membrane state. The α dispersion ismainly due to the extracellular fluid, but counterion polarization,membrane conductance and the charging of intracellular membrane boundorganelles also contribute. The β dispersion occurs at lowradiofrequencies, arising principally from the capacitive charging ofcellular membranes in tissues. We present results obtained in irradiatedexcised mice organs
