Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and oxidation testswere performed on a 316L stainless steel in PWRenvironments with hydrogenated, fully-aerated andaerated transients chemistries (hydrogenated and aeratedchemistries are alternatively applied). The results showthat the presence of dissolved oxygen in primary waterhas an impact on the morphology and composition of theoxide films formed at 340 °C. The cracking networksresulting from the SCC tests were quantitativelycharacterized thanks to surface and cross-section SEMobservations. A lower crack density and smaller crackswere observed in aerated conditions while the crackingnetwork is similar in aerated transient conditions to thatobtained in nominal primary water.
